“My name is Gia . I was born and raised in Rochester NY. I love the intense and fluid nature of watercolor. I create highly saturated, tasty watercolor paintings of real and imaginary creatures. I am a self taught artist and I hope that I can shed a new and beautiful light on under appreciated, over looked and imaginary life forms. I also paint pet portraits and illustrations for children's books too. I have stickers, art prints and original watercolors available of my work.”
1) What drew you to watercolor painting ?
“I love the wild, temperamental side of watercolor. I treat my paint like my partner and not something I want to control 100%. I enjoy the happy accidents. Everything affects a wet watercolor wash, the cleanliness of the water , the humidity in the air , salt and wet paint splatters. Watercolor is exciting all the time.”
2) Who is your community and what is your relationship with them?
“I’m not sure I have one. My community are the people that randomly walk into my life. I’ve always had strange, random pockets of friends through out my life. I don’t really fit in anywhere. A eclectic group of people seem to be drawn to my art.
As far as the Rochester art community is concerned, I am lucky enough to call many of them my friends. We have a strong group of very talented artists living here in the Rochester area. Rochester pride is contagious and the support for each other is genuine.”
3) Who or what has had the biggest influence on the way you approach your work?
“My family’s belief in me. My mom has always supported and encouraged my art. I try to weave artwork into my daily life. I have a regular full time job but it’s still important that I have my own space where I can create art when I want to. I just dive in and treat it like a part time job.”
4) What drives your creativity?
“Dreams. Things that fascinated me as a child. Forgotten creatures in limbo, dinosaurs and fairytales. The Ocean. Insect world

5) What has been the most rewarding thing your work has given you?
“My art is a form of meditation that offers me a peace of mind that I can’t get anywhere else. I have some control over my own universe, even when I let the paint do it’s own thing. Art is the only thing that has come easy for me. it’s a gift that has given my life some meaning.”
6) What lasting effect do you hope to leave behind on the world with your creativity?
“I hope my art can help people look at the world a little bit differently. To form empathy for a misunderstood creature, to highlight the beauty in something that may have been overlooked. To fall in love with strong, unapologetic color. To build sympathy for little creatures. To appreciate the magic that surrounds us on this beautiful planet.”
